PLUS has recently started its public pilot for RFID at 9 designated closed-toll plazas on the North-South Expressway. After two weeks, the highway concessionaire has shared that it is seeing an upward trend as more Kedahans and Penangites migrate to the new contactless and cashless payment system.
According to PLUS, the RFID penetration has increased from 2.3% two weeks ago up to 10% today. PLUS Managing Director Datuk Azman Ismail said that it is encouraging to see the positive take up of RFID within a short period of 14 days. He is confident that this will increase as more will see the multiple benefits of the payment solution. Apart from promoting physical distancing, the RFID tag is linked to a Touch ‘n Go eWallet. This reduces the probability of being stuck in the toll lane because of insufficient funds and the need to reload a physical TNG card.
PLUS has introduced dedicated RFID lanes at 9 closed toll plazas namely Hutan Kampung, Alor Setar Utara, Alor Setar Selatan, Pendang, Gurun, Sungai Petani Utara, Sungai Petani Selatan, Bertam and Sungai Dua. The implementation of RFID is in line with the government’s vision towards a MultiLane Free Flow (MLFF) system for a congestion free travel.
Physical Touch ‘n Go card and SmartTAGs are still accepted at PLUS highways. However, at smaller toll plazas with limited lanes, some SmartTAG lanes were converted to dedicated RFID lanes. Apart from the 9 toll plazas, RFID is also supported on the Penang Bridge and at 10 open toll system plazas.
Those interested to install RFID on their vehicles can do so at the nearest RFID fitment centres. Alternatively, Touch ‘n Go is also offering DIY Self-fitment kit which is available online. The RFID tag costs RM35 each and it comes with no pre-loaded value. You can stand a chance of winning an RFID self-fitment kit by joining our giveaway.
For greater convenience, motorists can enable auto reload via debit or credit card. In case you missed it, eligible Malaysians can redeem their RM50 ePenjana eWallet credit which can be used for RFID payment via Touch ‘n Go eWallet.
