Proton sold 13,216 cars in July 2020, highest monthly sales in 8 years

As the Malaysia’s economy reopens under the RMCO phase, Proton has announced that July 2020 was their best month in 8 years with a total of 13,216 units sold. According to the national carmaker, this is their highest monthly sales volume since June 2012.

Four of their models – the Saga, Persona, Exora and X70, have emerged as sales leaders in the respective segments. Overall sales have increased by 37.3% from June 2020 where it sold 9,623 units. Compared to the July last year, Proton has sold 45.7% more cars (July 2019: 9,072).

According to Proton, its Year-To-Date (YTD) market share as at July 2020 stands at a forecast of 21.8%, which is a growth of 6.7% over the same period last year. It added that the current sales growth has shrunk its volume gap compared to 2019 to just 4.2% (50,294 vs 52,499), which is significantly lower than the forecasted gap for Total Industry Volume (TIV) at 33% (230,929 vs 347,177).

Their best selling model is the Proton Saga with a total of 5,421 units sold. This was assisted by its Saga Anniversary Edition and all 1,100 units were fully booked within 5 days from its launch. July 2020 also marks its highest sales figure for the Saga since April 2014 (6,307 units).

Proton’s next best-seller is the X70 SUV with a total of 3,087 units sold. The X70 is the highest volume SUV across all SUV segments in Malaysia and July marks the highest sales for the model since February 2019.

Proton Saga – 5,421 units
Proton Persona – 3,043 units
Proton Exora – 792 units
Proton Iriz – 873 units
Proton X70 – 3,087 units

According to Proton Edar CEO Roslan Abdullah, their in-house vehicle financing provider, Proton Commerce saw an increase of 100% in the number of loans it disbursed compared to the previous month. Just recently, they have unveiled a new hire purchase loan campaign for fresh graduates with interest as low as 2.98%.

Roslan added that for August, Proton will look to continue to excite the market and to stimulate sales in preparation for more model introductions later in the year.
