MSI Creator 17: The world’s first mini LED laptop is now in Malaysia, priced from RM11,499

When MSI showed off the Creator 17 at CES 2020 in Las Vegas, it was boasted as the world’s first laptop to use a mini LED display. Now nearly seven months later, it has finally made its way to Malaysia.

Featuring a stylish space grey aluminium chassis, the Creator 17 is touted to be portable for a 17” laptop, measuring just 20.25mm slim and weighing 2.5kg.

As the name denotes, the Creator 17 has a 17” display capable showing of 4K resolution images at a 16:9 aspect ratio. MSI claims the Creator 17 the display offers 1,000 nits of peak brightness that is twice as bright as a regular LED or OLED screens. In comparison, Apple’s MacBook Pro 13″ model and Dell XPS 15, configured with an FHD display, are both said to offer 500 nits of brightness.

Another differentiator is the fact that normal laptops use standard LEDs that are larger, at 2mm in size. A mini LED is said to be a tenth of that size and this enables the manufacturer to pack more LEDs closer together, offering more 240 zones of local dimming control.

With these features, the display is able to show colour-accurate images with a wide colour gamut of up to 100% DCI-P3. This is the optimal standard in the motion picture industry, capable of reproducing greater depth, textures and true-to-life images and videos. HDR is said to look better thanks to the higher level of contrast between light and dark

MSI’s Creator 17 will be offered in two variants in Malaysia. They come powered by the latest 10th generation Intel Core i7 processor (Comet Lake) with 8-cores and is claimed to offer great performance for multi-tasking and pro-level processing jobs.

Besides that, users can choose between configuring the Creator 17 with either an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 or Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super Max-Q. MSI said the high-performance GPU is suited for creative workflows whether it is for graphic design, video editing or 3D rendering.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 variant is recommended for casual users who want to consume HDR content while having the flexibility to edit photos and videos. Meanwhile, the GeForce RTX 2070 Super Max-Q is more suited for the users who demand the very best from their laptop and need a powerful laptop that is able to keep up with power-hungry productivity apps.

For creators that engage in video editing or audio mixing, the Creator 17 comes with a new Duo Wave Speaker that MSI claims to produce deep, warm bass and clean sounds to better monitor their project’s audio quality. At the same time, it comes with support for Hi-Resolution Audio.

According to MSI the Creator 17’s full charge is rated to offers 7 hours of battery life. The laptop can be charged via traditional A/C power delivery as well as USB-C power charging when used with a 65W power deliver (PD) adapter or power bank.

But when you are back at your desk and need to multitask with multiple monitors, the Creator 17’s comes with a vast array of connectivity ports including a full-size HDMI port, a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 and a Thunderbolt 3 open lots of possibilities. It is said to offer up to 8K resolution out via Thunderbolt 3.

You also have access to two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports for connecting your peripherals. There is also an Ethernet port, headphone out, microphone in and microSD card reader.

There’s no need to remember login passwords because the Creator 17 comes with Windows Hello, so you can sign into Windows 10 Pro by using your fingerprints or facial recognition.
