When Sony first announced the PlayStation 5 (PS5) in June 2020, many fans were surprised by the direction the console-maker took with its design. It was unusually tall and more importantly, Sony only announced one version in white and black with blue accents. That is a major departure from black colour scheme used in the previous consoles dating back to the PlayStation 2.
Well, it turns out that Sony may be listening to its fans after all as an image of a black coloured PS5 has emerged on ResetEra, an online forum that’s known for gaming-related leaks.
The image shows a black PS5 console and a Dual Sense controller with red accent lights instead of the white version’s blue. The image was shared by user BarrBarr who said:
“Not sure where to post this, but at work we just received a promo picture that shows a black and red PS5.”
When questioned by another forum member, BarrBarr claimed that the promo is real and from Sony. Though he was quick to mention that he was not sure whether Sony would make a console in that colour.
Besides the black PS5, the leaked image contained other Sony products that included a camera, Xperia TV and a Sony Android phone. According to BGR, the leaked image could very well be a concept image that Sony photoshopped to match the colour of the other products in the image.
But regardless whether the black PS5 console is real, there is no doubt that Sony will make multiple versions of its next-generation console in a variety of colours. We need only look at its history with the PS4 where it has released many limited editions of the console in the past to coincide with the release of a major game.
Aside from donning the usual black exterior, we had various versions of the PS4 that came in red, blue, gold and white. Sony even released the PS4 in the classic grey colour scheme of the original console in celebration of its 20th anniversary back in 2014.
In case you didn’t know, the PS5 will be powered by a custom eight-core AMD Ryzen “Zen 2” CPU that is clocked at 3.5GHz and on a custom GPU based on AMD’s Radeon RDNA 2 architecture. It is also said to capable of delivering games at 4K resolution at 120Hz, boasts a custom Tempest 3D Audio Engine that is specially made for more immersive sounds.
Sony also said the PS5 will be backwards compatible with classic PS4 games, which further expands your library of games to play on the console. At launch, the console will benefit from many exciting games such as Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
Sony is confirmed to be launching the PS5 by this holiday season and judging by that timeline, the company should be revealing the price and preorder details in the near future.
