Samsung’s UV Steriliser wirelessly charges your phone while killing bacteria and germs

In light of the ongoing COVID-19 situation, personal hygiene has been more important than ever. Regular hand washing, the use of face masks, and other preventive measures have become a part of the new normal. As such, Samsung has announced a new product to help “combat the spread of bacteria and germs”: the UV Steriliser.

The UV steriliser also comes with a neat trick—it wirelessly charges your Qi-compliant devices at the same time. According to Samsung, 99% of bacteria and germs, including E.coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans, on various devices can be “effectively killed” by the company’s wireless charger.

It appears to be fairly simple to use, as well. There’s a single physical button that turns the UV function on or off, and the UV Steriliser automatically turns off after 10 minutes. And while you shouldn’t have any compatibility issues with Qi-certified devices, Samsung hasn’t confirmed the charging speed of the wireless charger just yet. Still, with wireless charging being supported on more and more devices nowadays, the Qi-supported charging is certainly appreciated.

When the UV Steriliser is on, dual UV lights sterilise the top and bottom of any devices that have been placed inside. Samsung says that once the process is completed, devices are “disinfected, charged, and ready to use”. Two independent test and certification institutes (Intertek, SGS) have reportedly confirmed this, and with measurements of 196mm x 96mm x 33mm, most mobile devices should fit.

Off the top of my head, I can already think of a couple of daily devices I have that could do with daily sterilisations: my smartphone, TWS headphones, and possibly my shades. Be warned: the disinfecting process only works on areas that have been exposed to UV light, so avoid cramming in too many devices at the same time. The logical solution would be to only use one device at a time within the UV Steriliser, although Samsung hasn’t confirmed if you can disinfect multiple devices simultaneously.

The UV Steriliser will be available sometime in June 2020 at Samsung’s online and retail stores. No mention of pricing has been made just yet, while we aren’t sure if the device is even coming to Malaysia. Still, I can’t help but be intrigued—charge, and sterilise my stuff at the same time? Yes, please.
