What happens when you combine Transformers and Back To The Future (BTTF) together? You get the time-travelling Transformer, Gigawatt. The latest mash-up toy created by Hasbro was revealed on 3 July 2020 to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the BTTF franchise.
This is the first time the two iconic ‘80s icons have appeared together though Hasbro had previously done similar collaborations with Ghostbusters and Star Wars. Now, the iconic time-travelling DMC DeLorean is getting the Transformer treatment, turning it into a bi-pedal robot complete with its own set of weapons.
The new Autobot transformer converts from a car into a 5.5” robot in just 17 steps. It carries many nostalgic elements from the BTTF movies including Doc Brown-style goggles and a flux capacitor chest piece that shows some of the important dates from the film.
Even when transformed into a vehicle, Gigawatt holds plenty of cool details like gull-wing doors that actually open up. Even the wheels can rotate from vertical to a horizontal position, just like in the movie. Another cool feature is the lightning bolt hook, a pivotal plot device from the first movie, that attaches to the back of the car.
Of course, since Gigawatt is a Transformer, it comes with some weapons for self-defence no less. Included in the package are a blaster and whip antenna, which incidentally comes from the aforementioned lightning bolt hook.
Apart from the collectable figure, comics publisher IDW is also coming up with Transformers / Back to the Future, a four-part comic book series. The first issue cover has been revealed today and here is the story synopsis:
Marty McFly has just returned to his home sweet home, Hill Valley 1985, and everything’s looking up… that is, until Marty and his friend Doc Brown’s time machine attracts the attention of the Decepticons! With one small mistake, Marty finds himself thrust into an adventure to stop the Decepticon plot in the past, present, and future… all with the help of a new time machine: the Autobot, Gigawatt!
The first run of the figure, priced at USD 29.99 (about RM128), is limited to just 1,985 pieces, available in a limited edition numbered package, exclusively from Walmart.com. A quick check on Walmart’s website shows that Gigawatt is sold out. According to Hyepbeast, the first run figures are already being sold on eBay with prices above USD500 (about RM2,142).
Hasbro will be releasing a second variant release of the figure will be available starting 1 October 2020 to coincide with the release of the comic book. IGN said the collectable will be available via HasbroPulse.com and select retailers around the world.
There is no word on the collectible figure’s price or availability in Malaysia.
