PENJANA: Free 1GB daily data from telcos now valid for 24 hours

As announced by the Prime Minister, all telcos are offering free 1GB of data daily for productivity and learning until the 31st of December 2020. Initially, the free data was only limited from 8am to 6pm, but now you can use it for the entire day starting from 1st July 2020.

Free data with 24-hour validity

Malaysia’s major telcos which consist of Celcom, Digi, Maxis, TM and U Mobile have jointly announced that it is extending access to the free 1GB productivity internet offer to 24 hours. This will be effective from 1st July until 31st December 2020. The offer is applicable to all active postpaid and prepaid customers.

This free data initiative was announced as part of the short-term Economic Recovery Plan which is also known as PENJANA. However, the offering is different from the previous free data offer that was introduced during the early phases of the MCO.

Social, Gaming, Music and Video not included

Under the PENJANA program, the free 1GB data does not cover gaming, social media, video and music streaming. Below is the list of applications and services that are not covered:

In addition, telcos are still offering free and unlimited access to important apps and websites which include MySejahtera, MyTrace, health-related information and government websites and free calls to CPRC Hotline. To redeem the free data, you’ll need to refer to your respective telco for further instructions and typically you can activate it from the self-care app.

The telcos have also mentioned that a wide range of affordable prepaid and postpaid offerings were introduced over the past few months. Maxis has recently upgraded its quota for its postpaid plans while Celcom has revised its add-on quota offering for its Mega postpaid. When it comes to prepaid, the big 4 telcos – Celcom, Digi, Maxis and U Mobile are currently offering unlimited data with capped speeds from RM35/month.
