Taiwanese Pokemon Go fan Chen San-yuan, who is also known on the internet as the “Pokemon Go grandpa”, has recently been spotted carrying 64 phones on his ‘peacock-like’ bicycle contraption with the goal of acing his Pokemon Go game. He first went viral in 2018 after he was seen playing the game with 11 phones attached to his bike.
Over the last two years, his mobile phone holder kept growing as he added more phones. In 2019, he was using 45 smartphones at the same time.
Now it seems he’s evolved to his final form. Although, who knows? He could be on the way to create an even bigger contraption for his bike so he could put more phones in—and theoretically becomes a Mega Evolved version. I just can’t imagine something bigger that could still be stable on top of his bike.
Chen explained in 2018 that he took on the hobby after learning about the game from his grandson. He spends USD1,290 a month to add phones to his collection and add lures to Pokestops, among other in-app upgrades. Of all the Pokemon, his favourite one is Snorlax.
I was a little concerned to see the Pokemon Go grandpa himself out and about during a global pandemic, but according to Taiwan’s COVID-19 statistics, there had been zero new cases since the 20th June, and cases have been a steady low since April. As long as he watches the road carefully and keeps safe, I think he’ll be fine.
