BMW Malaysia recently unveiled the new 2020 BMW X5 xDrive45e M Sport plug-in hybrid SUV during a live stream session.
The new xDrive45e features unique updates to its sporty appearance. On the outside, it gets slim adaptive LED headlights with BMW selective beam and front LED fog lights that complement the signature front grille. With the M Sport package, the SUV comes equipped with 20” star spoke-style 740M two-tone alloy wheels, along with the signature M sports brake with blue callipers.
Under the hood, it is powered by a three-litre six-cylinder engine complete with the BMW eDrive technology. The engine offers a combined maximum output of 290kW/394hp and a combined peak torque of 600Nm, is capable of travelling at a top speed of 235km/h. The century sprint can be made in only 5.6 seconds.
As this is an electrified SUV, xDrive45e is capable of being driven in a full-electric mode. The SUV’s lithium-ion battery has been uprated at 24kWh, a capacity that is triple compared to the previous model. BMW claims the SUV has an electric driving range of up to 77km on a full charge and can travel at a top speed of 135km/h. It also boasts low fuel consumption of 2.5 litres/100km and reduced carbon emission of 56g/km.
When plugged in to charge it takes six hours and 50 minutes to achieve a full charge using a BMW i Wallbox (with a 3.7kW output). The number goes up to 10 hours and 30 minutes if you use the supplied charger and a three-pin, 240-volt socket. Much like other BMW plug-in hybrids, it uses a Type 2 connector for charging.
Inside, it comes fitted with an M leather steering wheel, an electrically adjustable steering wheel and sport front seats with memory function for the driver’s seat.
The new xDrive45e is fitted with BMW Live Cockpit Professional infotainment system with twin 12.3-inch fully digital instrument touchscreen displays. It comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to help you access features of your phone such as navigation, music, messages and more with voice commands on the on-board navigation buttons.
Enjoy music as you drive with the 464-watt Harman Kardon surround sound system. Need to charge your smartphone while on the go? There’s a Qi wireless smartphone charger to help top up your phone’s power.
You also get the Intelligent Personal Assistant voice control. Rear passengers will be entertained by the Rear Seat Entertainment system that comes with a Blu-ray player, twin 10.2-inch touchscreen monitors.
The SUV comes with the BMW Personal CoPilot, which includes the Lane Departure Warning and Lane Changing Warning. The system also features the Frontal Collision Warning with braking intervention, Rear Crossing Traffic Warning, Rear Collision Prevention, as well as the speed limit info.
It also is equipped with the intelligent Parking Assistant Plus with Surround View Camera, along with the Reversing Assistant. The latter keeps a record of the last 50 metres of the drive of speed up to 35km/h, and will also assist to reverse out from a parking spot or tight spaces by taking over the steering.
Another big upgrade on the xDrive45e is its 2-axle air suspension on both the front and rear axles. This is an improvement over the previous xDrive40e’s air suspension setup, which was only fitted to the rear axle.
Though it has a reduced boot capacity due to its electric motor, it is 150 litres smaller compared to the petrol model at just 500 litres. But it can be increased up to 1,720 litres when the rear seats are folded. Drivers also benefit from an automatic tailgate operation that provides contactless opening and closing functions.
The xDrive45e boasts BMW’s Comfort Access 2.0, a new contactless locking and unlocking feature. Using sensors on the side of the SUV, it can detect the vehicle key and unlocks the vehicle when the driver approaches it from one meter away and locks it when they walk two meters away from it.
The BMW Display Key is also included along with the BMW Digital key that allows selected Samsung smartphones with Near Field Communication (NFC) to be used as a key.
Colour offerings for the xDrive45e include Phytonic Blue, Black Sapphire, Mineral White and Artic Grey. They will be complemented with upholstery of leather Vernasca design perforations in black and a fine-wood trim Fineline Stripe with brown high-gloss.
The new BMW X5 xDrive45e M Sport has a retail price of RM440,745 (on-the-road without insurance) and will be available at all authorised BMW dealerships nationwide from 20 June 2020.
According to Paultan.org, the actual recommended retail price of the vehicle is RM595,382, but with energy-efficient vehicle (EEV) incentives, the cost is brought down to RM448,800 which is a staggering reduction of RM146,582. Furthermore, the sales tax (SST) exemption takes an additional RM8,055 off the price to arrive at the final price above.
For those interested in purchasing the new xDrive45e, BMW is offering a financing plan where the SUV can be owned with a monthly instalment plan starting from RM5,028 (based on estimates of an 80% loan on a five-year tenure). Owners will also receive the complete BMW Group Malaysia Premium Ownership experience which includes:
