TNB is reviewing its mechanisms after public backlash over high electricity bills

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) will review its mechanisms to address the recent high electricity bill complaints from its consumers. According to its chairman, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, TNB would strive to find a proper solution together with the relevant authorities.

He shared on Facebook that electricity meter readings were suspended during the movement control order (MCO) and consumers were charged based on estimated usage. Actual meter readings have resumed since 15th May and the latest bill reflects the actual consumption during the MCO period.

Mahdzir acknowledges the complaints and concerns from Malaysians when they received their bills. He assured that as the Chairman of TNB, he and his management will work together with the relevant authorities including the Ministry of Water, Land and Natural Resources and the Energy Commission to study several mechanisms to address the complaints.

He also refuted allegations about his allowance as the TNB Chairman. He said his actual allowance received is much lower than what was claimed in several viral posts.

Recently, UMNO Information Chief Shahril Hamdan has urge TNB to clarify the status of the bills to avoid confusion among the people. He suggested the utility company to give bulk discounts on bills without complicated calculations.

Shahril added that the idea of giving discounts according to monthly usage amount was correct in its concept but the reality of the implementation may not be appropriate in this short-term scenario. This is due to most Malaysians complying with the government’s order to stay at home and this had caused an increase in electricity consumption among domestic consumers. When Malaysians get a higher bill, it causes anxiety, especially in this challenging and uncertain economic environment.
