PSA: Carpooling with non-family members allowed during RMCO

The Malaysian government has recently loosened social distancing guidelines for various forms of public transportation. The move allows airlines, express bus, rail, taxi and eHailing operators to run at 100% capacity.

For personal vehicles, the government has also loosened restrictions which allow private car drivers to ferry friends and non-family members. According to Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Thursday, co-workers that are heading to work are now allowed to carpool.

Previously, carpooling is not permitted as private vehicles are limited to family members only. During the first phase of the MCO, only one family representative is allowed to go out to buy essentials and as of 27th of May, private vehicles may carry up to its legal capacity but it is still limited to family members or individuals that are staying in the same house.

With the new announcement, the minister has said that you may now pick up non-family members or those who are not staying in the same house. The minister also reminded everyone to only carry passengers up to the vehicle’s permitted capacity. This means if you have a 7-seater MPV, a driver can bring up to 6 passengers.
