Sony’s PlayStation 5 is now official. We have all gotten a good look at the console and the accessories that complement it. But to truly get an idea of what this next generation console is truly capable of, we need to look at the games.
Indeed, Sony did not disappoint during its big reveal as it has wasted no time to show off some of the upcoming next-generation games on the PS5. While there were a few remastered titles thrown in the mix but the vast majority are new titles.
Here are my top games from the numerous games announced during Sony’s livestream event.
I couldn’t be more excited for the sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn, arguably one of the best games from Sony’s PlayStation 4 library. This stunning action roleplaying game continues the adventures of Aloy after the end of the first game. Follow Aloy as she heads out west of post-apocalyptic America to uncover the mysteries of a catastrophe that is destroying the world.
While there wasn’t any gameplay shown during the trailer, I was still captivated by Guerilla Games’ world. Needless to say, I was stoked to fight more robotic animal creatures again. The trailer reminded me of the first time I encountered the mechanical prehistoric beasts in the previous game. Each beast was challenge and puzzle in its own right. Looking and experimenting with the different weapons and tools to defeat them was half the fun.
While the first game was limited in its scope, sticking to a more winter-like atmosphere, this game looks to have more varied environments in this game from grassy plains, snow-capped mountains and underwater ruins.
I love games with immersive worlds to explore. That’s why Stray is right up my alley. The idea of playing as a cat in a strange city that reminds me of the Kowloon Walled City has definitely piqued my interest. Besides, who doesn’t love cats?
Stray has a very unique point of view that definitely looks fresh. I also loved the fact that you get a lot of cat stuff like sneaking around, walking on rooftops and meowing endlessly to annoy everyone in the area. This may very well be a next-generation upgrade to 2019’s Untitled Goose Game. Even if it isn’t set in a real-world, I loved how there is a good mix of puzzle and exploration thrown in. This is one game I will keep an eye out on in 2021.
The original real driving simulator returns on the PS5, now looking more stunning than ever. Developers Polyphony Digital has used the past seven years, since the last game, to add even more visual enhancements bring each car to life.
I can’t say that I’ve been great at driving simulators but I definitely can appreciate the super realistic graphics. I loved the sheer variety of real-world sports cars from the Dodge Viper GTS, Jaguar E-Type, Lamborghini Diablo, Toyota Supra GT3 and many others. I have no doubt that the latest game will please petrol heads everywhere. Given that racetracks are more difficult to access in the real world with the current Covid-19 pandemic, Gran Turismo 7 is a welcome relief for those who have the need for speed.
I love how visually interesting Kena: Bridge of Spirits is. Though develop Ember Lab is a small team, it is amazing to see how they have turned what looks like a CGI animation movie into an actual game.
I get strong vibes of Zelda and even a bit of Studio Ghibli’s My Neighbour Totoro from the video and screenshots. The world looks suitable charming and inviting to explore. It doesn’t hurt that there’s some fast-paced combat thrown in the mix along with a host of abilities to interact with the world.
Created by Insomniac Games, Spider-Man: Miles Morales is looking to set the bar even higher after 2018’s phenomenal Spider-Man for the PS4. The teaser trailer doesn’t tell much in terms of story or reveal any actual gameplay but the footage looks incredible nonetheless.
As you can tell from the name of the game, the lead character is not Peter Parker but rather Miles Morales, the lead character in the movie Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse. Unlike the movie, the tone of the game definitely edges towards realism and it looks like Miles has to protect New York City from all manner of bad guys once again.
I absolutely love the grungy film style used in Deathloop’s trailer. The tale of two assassins stuck in a time loop on a lawless island filled with killers who want their blood is just captivating. I mean you can’t ask for a more killer setting than that.
Made by the studio behind the Dishonored games, Deathloop gives the impression that it is a faster and louder game than Arkane’s stealth action game. Armed with otherworldly powers and a whole arsenal of deadly weapons I love how the game easily flips back and forth between you being the hunter and the hunted.
The grandaddy of survival horror is back once again after having been successfully revived by the past two year’s retreads on Resident Evil 2 and 3. Resident Evil Village is invoking plenty of creepy vibes as developer Capcom does what it does best.
Story-wise, the game will star Ethan from Resident Evil 7 and things are not looking good for him as all sorts of creepy things occur in a quiet European village. There is no doubt that we will see a whole bunch of crazy characters inhabiting this scary new world.
It is really interesting that this game merges the first-person perspective from Resident Evil 7 and the setting of Resident Evil 4. Quite frankly, I loved the fourth game but didn’t play the former as it looked too scary. But this game definitely intrigues me and I want more of it.
Here’s yet another graphically impressive game from developers Insomniac Games. The dynamic robot and space alien cat duo Ratchet & Clank are back for more platforming and third-person shooting action in their latest adventure.
I love how the entire game looks like a Pixar movie on steroids. Not only do we get to appreciate the graphics but we can actually interact with the world too. It seems that worlds and dimensions are colliding in this latest game. I hazard a guess that there will be plenty of inter-dimensional high jinks involved and it will definitely play a key part in both the story and gameplay.
