Huawei to release Malaysia’s most affordable 5G smartphone on 19 June

Huawei Malaysia is announcing the Nova 7 5G and Nova 7 SE 5G next week and both will support 5G connectivity. The phones are part of the new Nova 7 series that was launched in China in April.

Both devices will go on sale nationwide from 19th June in conjunction with Huawei’s AppGallery Carnival 2020. According to the official teaser, those that purchase the device will stand a chance to win prizes that worth up to RM2,000,000.

Huawei Malaysia has hinted that the new Nova 7 series will be priced above RM1,000. The Chinese brand claims that the Nova 7 series will be the most affordable 5G smartphone in Malaysia. As a comparison, the most affordable flagship smartphone with 5G support is the Poco F2 Pro that’s priced at RM2,199. More details of the Nova 7 series pricing and availability are expected to be revealed soon.

Huawei Nova 7 5G

The Nova 7 5G is currently the better option of the two models in Malaysia. It features a 6.53″ Full HD+ OLED display and it runs on Huawei’s new Kirin 985 5G chipset. In China, the device comes with 8GB RAM and with the option of 128GB or 256GB of storage.

In the camera department, the device gets a quad-camera setup that has a high-resolution 64MP main camera, an 8MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and an 8MP ultra-wide-angle shooter. There’s also a 2MP camera for macro effects. For selfies, the punch-hole on the top-left corner of the screen houses a 32MP front camera.

The Nova 7 5G is juiced up by a 4,000mAh battery and it supports 40W fast-charging via USB-C. The device runs on Android 10 with EMUI 10.1.1. However, due to the current restrictions, it won’t come with Google apps and services pre-installed, and you’ll have to discover and download apps through the Huawei AppGallery.

In China, the Nova 7 5G is priced as follows:

8GB RAM, 128GB storage – CNY2,999 (~RM1,800)
8GB RAM, 256GB storage – CNY3,399 (~RM2,040)

Huawei Nova 7 SE 5G

For a more affordable alternative, there’s the Nova 7 SE 5G. It has a 6.5″ Full HD+ display that uses an IPS LCD panel instead of OLED. Under the hood, it runs on a Kirin 820 processor and it also supports 5G. Similar to the Nova 7, it has 8GB of RAM with either 128GB or 256GB storage options in China.

Although the quad-camera bump looks similar, the configuration is slightly different. You still get a 64MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle shooter and a 2MP macro camera. However, the telephoto camera has been replaced with a 2MP depth sensor. For selfies, the punch-hole settles for a lower resolution 16MP front camera.

Powering the device is also the same 4,000mAh battery capacity and it supports 40W fast-charging via USB-C. The device also runs on Android 10 with EMUI 10.1.1 and it also uses Huawei AppGallery for app installations.

Below is the Nova 7 SE pricing in China:

8GB RAM, 128GB storage – CNY2,399 (~RM1,440)
8GB RAM, 256GB storage – CNY2,799 (~RM1,680)
