As part of the economic recovery plan, the Malaysian government has introduced the ePenjana program which encourages cashless and contactless transactions. Similar to eTunai Rakyat, eligible Malaysians will receive free credit in their eWallets.

The ePenjana offers RM50 of credit and it comes with matching discount vouchers and cashbacks worth RM50 for physical purchases. The program will be open to Malaysians aged 18 years and above, and it will be implemented between July to September 2020. This is limited to Malaysians with an annual income of not more than RM100,000.

The eWallet programme is expected to benefit 15 million Malaysians and it will cost RM750 million in total. The RM50 credit is only applicable to offline/physical purchases. This means you can’t use it for online transactions including online shopping and non-retail based services.

There are no further details on the eWallet program. As a comparison, the eTunai Rakyat program that was introduced by the previous administration had distributed RM30 per eligible Malaysian. The program was limited to 3 eWallet providers – Grab, Boost and Touch ‘n Go.
