The number of new COVID-19 cases in Malaysia has jumped to 277 today which is a new record high. The previous record was on 26th March 2020 with 235 cases. The new update brings the total number of infections to 8,247. There are no new deaths recorded today and the death toll remains at 115 for 13 days straight.
Meanwhile, there are 28 new recoveries today and a total of 6,559 patients have recovered and discharged so far. The recovery rate is currently 79.53% and the mortality rate is now 1.39%.
At the moment, there are currently 1,573 active cases remaining which are receiving treatment. 6 are in ICU while 2 require respiratory support.
Out of the 277 cases, 2 are imported while the remaining 275 are transmitted locally. The two imported cases are individuals returning from Egypt and Spain. Among the local cases, 4 are Malaysians while 271 are foreigners.
The Ministry of Health has reported a total of 270 new cases from the Immigration Detention Depot at Bukit Jalil. There’s also one foreigner tested positive from the Pudu construction site. They added that there are no new cases at other active clusters.
At today’s briefing, Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has said that we are now seeing the amplification of a confined space. The Ministry is worried not only for the Immigration detention centres but also at other centres such as prisons.
