COVID-19: 57 new cases today (31 May), only 4 Malaysians among local cases

The Ministry of Health has recorded 57 new cases today, which brings the total number of COVID-19 cases in Malaysia to 7,819. There are no new deaths recorded and the death toll remains unchanged at 115 for 9 consecutive days.

The number of daily recoveries have dropped to 23 today and a total of 6,353 patients have already recovered and discharged. The recovery rate currently stands at 81.25% while the mortality rate is 1.47%.

At the moment, there are still 1,351 active cases which are still receiving treatment. 9 patients are in ICU while 2 require respiratory support.

Out of the 57 new positive reported today, there are 10 imported cases. From the 47 local cases, only 4 are Malaysians while the remaining 43 are foreigners. The bulk of cases involving non-Malaysians were recorded in Selangor with 27 cases, followed by Pahang with 15 cases.

Among the active clusters, there are 24 new cases at the Immigration Detention Depot at Sepang, 7 cases at a farm in Bera and 6 cases at a sawmill at Maran. There are also 2 cases at a construction company in Maran and 1 case each at Kg Sungai Lui and Pudu.

The Ministry has also provided an update on the Immigration Detention Depot situation and there are 283 positive cases at Bukit Jalil, 66 at Semenyih, 60 at Sepang and 2 at Putrajaya. The positive rate at Bukit Jalil detention centre is the highest at 18.3%.

According to the Health director-general, Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, the ministry is still investigating the source of the infection at the detention centres. As mentioned previously, the infections could be brought in by a 3rd party or through new detainees. All positive cases are currently isolated and receiving treatment.

Dr Noor Hisham has also warned that smokers are at higher risk of severe complications if they are infected by COVID-19. He shared that smoking will cause damage to lung functions which makes recovery harder.

As of 12pm yesterday, there are 5 red zones located at Hulu Langat, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur capital, Pudu and Rembau. Meanwhile, there are 59 yellow zones and 137 green zones. Perak loses its 100% green zone status after 1 new case was reported at Kinta.
