iOS 13.5 available now, speeds up iPhone unlocking for those that wear face masks

Unlocking newer iPhone models that use Face ID can be annoying during the current pandemic. The facial recognition tech isn’t designed to work with a face mask and it can be a hassle to skip Face ID in order to enter the passcode. Thankfully, Apple has just released iOS 13.5 which makes unlocking your iPhone slightly less frustrating.

iOS 13.5 which is currently available for download will help to speed up unlocking by allowing you to enter your passcode when you swipe up on the lock screen. Prior to this, it will reattempt to perform a Face unlock before it allows you to key in your passcode.

Apart from making unlocking easier, the new update also introduces the Exposure Notification API to support COVID-19 tracing apps by public health authorities. It also includes the option to control the expanding video tiles when you’re in a Group FaceTime call. To update your iPhone to iOS 13.5, you can go into Settings > General > Software update.

If you don’t like punching your passcode, there’s another way to use Face ID while wearing a face mask. It isn’t recommended by Apple as it may compromise the security of your iPhone. You can learn about this technique here.
