COVID-19: M’sia records 50 new cases today (21 May), 34 from Immigration Detention depot

The Ministry of Health has recorded 50 new COVID-19 cases today and a large number comes from the Immigration Detention depot at Bukit Jalil. This brings the total number of cases to 7,059.

There are no new deaths recorded and the total death toll remains at 114. 90 new recoveries were reported today and a total of 5,796 patients have been discharged so far. The recovery rate stands at 82.11% while the mortality rate is 1.61%.

There are current 1,149 active cases that are still receiving treatment. 10 patients are in ICU while 7 require respiratory support.

According to the Ministry of Health, there are 3 new imported cases while 47 are locally transmitted. A new cluster at the Bukit Jalil Immigration Detention Depot has been identified with 34 new cases reported today.

Until today, a total of 645 samples were taken at the detention centre. 35 were tested positive for COVID-19, 400 have returned negative and there are 210 remaining samples that are pending for results. Out of the 35 cases, there are 17 Myanmar citizens, 15 Indian citizens, one Sri Lankan, one Bangladeshi and one Egyptian.

In addition, there are 2 new cases from the Pasar Kajang cluster and 1 new case each from Pesantren, Sendayan and Pasar Chow Kit clusters.
