PSA: Travel between KL, Selangor and Putrajaya isn’t considered interstate

While selected businesses are allowed to reopen during the conditional movement control order (CMCO), interstate travel is still prohibited unless it is for emergency reasons. The government had previously provided a one-time interstate travel window between the 7th to 10th of May, to allow those who are stranded at their respective hometowns to return home.

With the interstate travel ban in place, some are still confused whether movement between Selangor and Kuala Lumpur is considered as interstate. What about Putrajaya to Selangor?

To provide clarity, the National Security Council has confirmed that movement between Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Putrajaya is considered as inter-district and it is permitted during the CMCO. Although Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Selangor are technically different states or territories, they are all categorised as the Klang Valley.

Despite repeated reminders and warnings, there are still people that try to cross state borders to balik kampung. Police had ordered thousands of vehicles to turn back and those attempting to travel interstate without permission could be sentenced under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342). For those that need to travel due to emergency reasons, they must apply for permission at the police station.

Inter-district travel is currently allowed in West Malaysia and there’s no longer a 10km radius limit. At the moment, up to 4 family members are allowed to travel in the same car.

For the upcoming Hari Raya celebration, home visits are permitted up to a maximum of 20 people but it should be restricted to close family members only. As advised by the Health director-general, the number of visitors should take into account the size of your home.
