Conditional Movement Control Order extended by 4 weeks until 9 June

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has just announced another four-week extension for the existing movement control order. The CMCO is now scheduled to end on 9th June 2020.

The new four-week extension was decided under the advice of the Ministry of Health and the National Security Council. This also means interstate travel for Hari Raya, Kaamatan and Gawai are not permitted.

However, during the festive season, the Prime Minister has said that close neighbours and relatives are allowed to visit each other. However, this is limited to travel within the state and with a maximum limit of 20 people at any given time.

In his address, the Prime Minister said that 6.64 million workers (43.6% of the workforce) have returned back to work under the conditional movement control order which started since 4th May 2020. This figure is expected to increase as more business are gradually reopened. All businesses are told to comply with the necessary SOPs to ensure a safe environment.

At the moment, there are still red zones in several districts. Those residing in these areas are urged to take extra precautions such as wearing a face mask and ensure social distancing. Meanwhile, those in green zones are told not to let their guard down as there’s still a risk of new infections. The Prime Minister also shared that vaccines will take 12 to 18 months to produce.

At the moment, Malaysia has been recording mostly double-digit new cases in the past few weeks. The MCO has helped to flatten the curve, to ensure that our medical healthcare system is not overwhelmed.

As of 12pm yesterday, there a total of 6,589 COVID-19 cases with 108 deaths reported so far. 74.81% of the total number of cases have already recovered with 1,552 cases still receiving treatment. When the MCO was announced, Malaysia had the highest number of infections in Southeast Asia and it appears that the movement restrictions have prevented the exponential surge of new cases that were expected in April.
