POCO F2 Pro is launching on 12 May, supports 5G and WiFi 6 in Malaysia

Xiaomi sub-brand Poco (aka Pocophone) is about to unveil a new smartphone next week and it is expected to be the true successor of its popular flagship, the Pocophone F1. The device name has been confirmed as the POCO F2 Pro and it appears to be coming to Malaysia very soon.

According to Poco’s global Twitter account, the F2 Pro launch is happening at 8pm (Malaysian time) on Tuesday, 12th May 2020. The event will be streamed live on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

Just recently, a new Xiaomi device with the model number M2004J11G has appeared on SIRIM alongside the Mi 10 and the Mi 10 Pro. The same device has also passed certification in other markets and it has been identified as a Poco smartphone.

According to the SIRIM listing, the new Pocophone will support 3500MHz and 3700MHz 5G bands but it’s missing the lower 700MHz which is listed for the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro. On top of that, the device also supports 802.11ax WiFi 6 and NFC.

Higher pricing than Pocophone F1

The Poco F2 Pro is expected to be a rebadged Redmi K30 Pro that was announced in China recently. In mainland China, the Redmi K30 Pro is priced at CNY 2,999 (about RM1,837) for the base 6GB RAM + 128GB storage model and CNY 3,399 (about RM2,082) for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage version. According to a purported leak, the Poco F2 Pro is alleged to be priced at EUR 649 (about RM3,085) for the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage version and EUR 749 (about RM3,561) for the 8GB RAM + 256GB storage option. Do note that European pricing is often significantly higher than our local market.

Redmi K30 Pro specs

To recap, the Redmi K30 Pro in China features a 6.67″ AMOLED display that pushes a Full HD+ resolution. Unlike the standard K30, it settles for a 60Hz refresh rate and comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Powering the device is a Snapdragon 865 processor that comes with up to 8GB LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Although most smartphone makers are moving towards punch-hole displays, the K30 pro still gets a pop-up 20MP selfie shooter.

At the rear, it has a quad-camera setup that consists of a 64MP main camera, a 13MP ultra-wide-angle shooter, a 5MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor. The K30 Pro still retains a couple of fan favourites including a 3.5mm headphone jack and an IR blaster.

The device is equipped with a fairly large 4,700mAh battery that supports 33W fast charging via USB-C. In China, there’s also a K30 Pro Zoom where it swaps the macro camera for a 8MP telephoto unit. Both the main and telephoto cameras come with OIS and it can do 3x optical zoom and up to 30x in digital.
