Gerak Malaysia FAQ: 2-way interstate trip allowed to pick up stranded family members

The Royal Malaysia Police has announced that interstate travel will be permitted for people that are stranded at hometowns between 7th to 10th May. Applications must be made via Gerak Malaysia app and everyone must follow the provided schedule. Ahead of the coming weekend, Gerak Malaysia has provided a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document which reveals more guidelines for interstate travel.

Gerak Malaysia 2.0 availability

Those intending to travel from their hometowns to the city, may download the latest Gerak Malaysia 2.0 app which allows users to provide their origin and destination address. According to Gerak Malaysia’s website, the latest Android version is already available on both Google Play Store and Huawei App Gallery. However, for iPhone users, the new Gerak Malaysia version 2.0 will only be available via the AppStore on the 7th of May.

You’ll need to be using the latest version in order to provide additional details as illustrated below:

For those who can’t download or install the app, you may submit a form to your nearest police station. Do note that an appointment must be made before going to the station to avoid overcrowding. You can get a copy of the interstate travel form here.

As announced by the police, below is the permitted travel schedule based on location:

7th May – From Kuala Lumpur

8th May – From Perak, Johor and Kelantan

9th May – From Perlis, Kedah, Pulau Pinang, Melaka and Pahang

10th May – From Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Terengganu

Travel Scenarios

Interestingly, Gerak Malaysia has provided a list of interstate scenarios that are allowed and not allowed during the 4-day travel window. According to the FAQ, interstate travel is allowed for the following scenarios:

• Family members (parents or relatives) that are stuck at your home that wishes to return to their hometown
• Those that wish to send their family members (parents or relatives) that are stuck during the movement control order
• A person that wish to pick up wife and children stuck at Gerik which requires a trip to Gerik and then back to Petaling Jaya.
• A person from Batu Pahat that’s working part-time in Putrajaya that wishes to return home. His father will pick him up in Putrajaya and will make a back to Batu Pahat.
• Children that were having their holidays at their grandparents’ house in Senai before the MCO and wish to return back to Klang.
• Those stuck at their in-laws’ house and wish to return back to their own home.

As announced by Senior Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaaob, the FAQ also states that each vehicle is permitted to carry a maximum of 4 people. This includes 1 driver and 3 passengers.

The FAQ also states that interstate travel is only those who are stranded. Some prohibited examples include holiday trips, Balik kampung, returning to hometown to pick up equipment or family members that wish to visit other relatives in other states.

After providing the necessary travel details via Gerak Malaysia, there won’t be any additional approval required. The app will not push any notification and you may proceed to travel at the given dates. All family members aged 16 years old and above must submit their own interstate travel request via the app.
