MCO: Interstate travel will be allowed from 7 to 10 May

Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has announced that the government is allowing a one-time interstate trip for those that are stuck at their hometowns to return to the city between 7th to 10th May 2020 (Thursday to Sunday). He added that the Royal Malaysia Police will provide a detailed schedule for the permitted interstate travel very soon.

The Senior Minister also reminded all affected civil servants not to rush back in the next few days when most sectors will reopen on Monday, the 4th of May. Although offices will be open on Monday, there’s no need to hurry as they are allowed to return only during the permitted interstate travel dates that are set by the police. They may resume work on the following Monday, 11th May.

He also urged all employers at private sectors to cooperate by allowing affected employees that are stuck at their respective home towns to return only during the permitted travel dates. They must allow their employees to start work the following Monday as they could only travel during the 4-day period. He hopes no employer will take action against its employees that don’t turn up to work next week.

Those that need to travel interstate must apply for permission via the Gerak Malaysia app or at their nearest police stations with an appointment. The police have received a total of 500,000 applications through Gerak Malaysia. As mentioned previously by the minister, balik kampung is strictly prohibited during the MCO.

Previously, the police had announced that interstate travel will be allowed between 1st to 3rd of May with each date assigned for each region. In the original schedule, 1st May was allocated for travel from Perak, Johor and Kelantan, 2nd May for Perlis, Kedah, Pulau Pinang, Melaka and Pahang, and 3rd May for Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Terengganu. Shortly after that, the Senior Minister had announced that the 1st to 3rd May travel dates were not approved as it requires proper study and cabinet approval before it is permitted.

The police are expected to prepare a new travel schedule within the next couple of days.
