Malaysia has recorded more new COVID-19 cases today compared to the number of new recoveries. A total of 69 new daily cases were recorded which brings the total number of infections to 6,071.
Unfortunately, there’s one more death recorded which brings the death toll figure to 103. In terms of recoveries, 39 people have recovered today which brings the total number of recoveries to 4,210. At the moment, the recovery rate has dipped slightly to 69.35%.
The number of active cases has increased slightly from 1,729 yesterday (30th April) to 1,758 cases today (1st May). 37 cases are currently in ICU with 14 patients requiring respiratory support.
According to the Ministry of Health, 12 out of 69 new cases reported today are imported cases. From the breakdown, 5 are returning Malaysians from Indonesia, followed by 3 from Singapore and one each from Cambodia, Canada, the Philippines and China.
Malaysia has been recording less than 100 new cases daily for 15 straight days. As revealed by the Ministry of Health, there are currently 8 remaining red zones in the country. Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan and Perak are currently green statewide.
Before the MCO is scheduled to end on 12th May, the Prime Minister has announced a further loosening of restrictions that will take effect from Monday, 4th of May. This includes reopening of restaurants for dine-in customers and non-contact outdoor activities such as jogging will be allowed.
According to health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, the decision to reopen the economy was decided collectively by the entire government after considering the need to balance efforts to control the disease and the consequences to the business. He said that the Ministry of Health has provided its input regarding the move and all signs showed that Malaysia has succeeded in preventing an explosive spread of the disease locally.
Dr Noor Hisham said that the health authorities had recommended against the reopening of the economy several weeks ago as it was unclear if Malaysia had successfully flattened the infection curve, but he added that this is no longer the case. He also urged everyone to maintain social distancing and tighten border control, maintain hygiene and to comply with guidelines.
