As Malaysia enters the next phase of the movement control order, it appears that the government has started loosening restrictions when it comes to essential movement. When the MCO was introduced, only one family representative is allowed to go out but now they are allowing one more family member that stays in the same house.
The new condition was added to the federal gazette for the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within Infected Local Areas) (No. 4) Regulations 2020. This takes effect for the period from 29th April 2020 to 12th May 2020.
Do note that the extra companion is only allowed when you go out to buy essentials such as food, medicine, dietary supplement, daily necessities or other goods from provider of essential services. This is also applicable for those seeking healthcare or medical services if reasonably necessary.
The 10km limit for movement still applies unless the essential goods or necessities are not available within the permitted radius. For further reading, you can refer to the official gazette that was published yesterday on page 1688 under Conditions for movement.
However, just because it is now permitted, it doesn’t mean that everyone should go out in pairs unless it is absolutely necessary. It is still advisable for each family to send just one person to go out as it helps to reduce exposure and overcrowding at public spaces. Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has warned that COVID-19 cases could surge if Malaysians let their guards down.
