DJI is unveiling its new Mavic Air 2 tomorrow and now we are getting a clearer look at the new compact drone thanks to serial leakster Roland Quandt. It kinda looks like a DJI Mavic Mini but with more grunt.
In terms of design, it looks similar to the early leaked photos that we’ve seen earlier. Unlike the original Mavic Air, the overall exterior has the same dull grey plastic finish like the current DJI Mavic Mini. Unlike the Mini, the Mavic Air has real avoidance sensors upfront and a chunky camera that says 48MP 1/2.0″ with a field of view of 84-degrees and f/2.8 aperture.
The biggest change has got to be the controller which is huge. Instead of mounting your phone at the bottom, the new Mavic Air 2 controller mounts your phone at the top with a selfie-stick style spring-loaded mechanism. There are no LED displays but there’s a toggle switch that allows you to select Tripod, Normal and Sport.
Like the new DJI drones, the controller sticks are removable for easier storage. However, there appears to be a new accessory in the kit that comes in white. It isn’t clear if this is the gimbal guard cover or a new type of holder.
According to Roland, the Mavic Air 2 is now powered by a 3,500mAh battery which is almost 50% more in capacity than the original Mavic Air’s 2,375mAh battery. It has a rated maximum flight time of 34 minutes with a maximum speed of 64.8km/h. The Mavic Air 2 is listed with a maximum flight height of 5,000m above sea level.
The 48MP camera can shoot up to 4K UHD videos and still images at 12MP or 48MP resolution. There’s also 8K Hyperlapse, FocusTrack, QuickShots, APAS 3.0 Obstacle Avoidance, OcuSync 2.0 and ActiveTrack 3.0.
Overall, the new drone weighs 570g which is heavier than the original model. The overall dimensions seems to be bigger as well at 253mm (width) x 77mm (height) and 183mm (depth).
The DJI Mavic Air 2 launch is happening at 9.30pm EDT 27th April which is 9.30am tomorrow (28th April) Malaysian time.
