After introducing the Galaxy A80 with a rotating camera last year, it appears that Samsung is finally joining the pop-up selfie camera bandwagon. The unnamed device was revealed by serial leakster @onleaks and it looks like a new budget smartphone.
Based on renders shared via Pigtou, the new Galaxy device is quite similar to the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019. It has a full edge to edge display without any punch-holes or notches but there’s a noticeable chin at the bottom.
The rear gets a typical triple-camera setup that’s aligned vertically and there’s also a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. There’s no info on the hardware specs just yet but it is said to come with a 6.5″ screen and there’s also an IR blaster at the top along with a USB-C port at the bottom.
This could be a new device in Samsung’s Galaxy A or Galaxy M lineup and it isn’t clear if it would come to our Malaysian market. Although this pop-up approach helps to provide an uninterrupted viewing experience, there are concerns about the reliability of its pop-up mechanism in the long run. For those who prefer to use face unlock, pop-up cameras are typically slower to operate.
It is weird that Samsung is still pursuing a pop-up camera smartphone in 2020 as most manufacturers especially Chinese brands are slowly switching to punch-hole cameras instead. The latest devices from Xiaomi, Huawei, Vivo and OnePlus are now using single or double punch-hole cameras for their latest lineup.
