100,000 people applied for interstate travel via Gerak Malaysia

The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Facebook page posted a press release stating that about 100,000 people have applied to get an interstate travel permit via the Gerak Malaysia app. The statement also mentioned that about 300,000 people have registered with Gerak Malaysia, just 12 hours after their official app launch.

This is as PDRM announced allowing a one-time permission for those currently in their hometowns to return to the city at a specific date, but they can only apply through the app. The applicants have not been able to travel back to their homes after the announcement of the Movement Control Order (MCO).

PDRM earlier mentioned the 1st of May to be the beginning of the allocated travel dates, however, Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has clarified that there’s some confusion with the recent announcement. They will allow registrations until the 1st May through Gerak Malaysia, but the actual travel date will only be announced after an approved SOP brought by a special cabinet meeting.

“In this time, we will observe and figure out the trends in applications that we’ve received through our Gerak Malaysia app. The results will be given to government officials so that we can recalculate the right dates of travel, depending on the amount of applications,” said PDRM in their statement.

They also urge the public to work together with them by only applying for an interstate movement permit with genuine reasons, so that the app would benefit the people who really do need to travel between states. If you need to apply for interstate travel, here’s a handy how-to.

Those who can’t register the app may apply for permission at their nearest police station by appointment.
