The world of smart wearables is steadily growing, with the advancement of mobile technology meaning that smartwatches are now more powerful than ever. Smartwatches in 2020 can range from the (usually affordable) simple fitness bands, all the way to sports-centric, premium smartwatches that cost way more.
The Garmin Fenix 6X series, certainly falls within the latter. Like others in the Fenix series, the smartwatch is clearly designed for the adventurer/sports enthusiasts—although there are plenty of smartwatch functions to make this an everyday wearable. It certainly looks the part, too.
So without any further ado, here’s why the Garmin Fenix 6X is a smartwatch with superpowers.
The idea behind the Garmin Fenix 6X Pro Solar, essentially, is to create a smartwatch that adventurers can take with them wherever they go—and battery life is a huge part of that. Garmin estimates that a single charge on the Fenix 6X will give you up to 21 days of usage in smartwatch mode, and with GPS tracking enabled, up to 70 hours.
In fact, Garmin says that you can even get 80 days with the Fenix 6X set to battery saver watch mode, which is pretty spectacular. To add to that, the range-topping Garmin Fenix 6X Pro Solar features solar charging—a first for the company—which extends the battery life in smartwatch mode up to 3 days. This is made possible by Power Glass, a transparent lens on your watch face.
For real-life situations, Garmin has introduced the new Power Manager so that Fenix 6X users can better track how certain settings affect battery life. Say you’re planning a solo hike around the hills of the weekend, where you won’t have any access to power—tweak your settings, estimate the charge, and you’re good to go.
Garmin is a company that has built its reputation on the strength of its location and navigation technology—in fact, it was recently reported that certain Air Force pilots in the U.S. have chosen to use Garmin smartwatches as backup navigation devices.
That expertise is clearly present in the Fenix 6X. Like others in the Fenix 6 series, there are built-in topographic maps for aspiring adventurers everywhere, including 2,000 ski resorts and 41,000 golf courses. Additionally, multi-satellite support for GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo mean that this is a serious piece of navigation tech.
The Fenix 6X is also clearly built to withstand some pretty hard conditions, and there’s even a Garmin Fenix 6X Sapphire edition that will have a scratch-resistant sapphire watch face.
Meanwhile, the Fenix 6X also comes with physical buttons on the sides of the watch, along with a 1.4” non-touch transflective display. Due to the way they work, touchscreen displays may not function normally in certain conditions—with the Garmin Fenix 6X, this isn’t an issue, even with gloves on. And of course, the smartwatch is rated at 10ATM for water resistance, so you can track water-based exercise routines as well.
The whole point of fitness tracking technology is to get to know your body better, and to measure your performance or health. Body Battery on the Fenix 6X is a feature that gives you an estimate of your energy level, using metrics such as heart rate variability, stress, and your activity. This will help a user to know when their body is ready for a workout, or when it’s time to take a rest. A Pulse Ox sensor will also measure the saturation of blood within your blood—this will give you an idea of how your body handles different activities, along with your general health.
There are also multiple sport modes supported, with advanced tracking technology helping athletes to measure their performance during biking, running, hiking, or even swimming. For swimming, the Fenix 6X is rated at 10ATM for water resistance, which means that the watch can withstand pressures equivalent to a depth of 100m.
A good example of this is PacePro, a feature to help runners to adjust their pacing strategies for a certain track/course. These strategies can be designed over the Garmin Connect smartphone app, and the Fenix 6X will keep runners informed on real-time performance versus any targets set during the run.
The important thing to understand about the Garmin Fenix 6X is that this is a smartwatch that has clearly been created for adventurers. Whether you’re hiking through the hills, skiing at exotic resorts around the world, or simply keeping your fitness up at home, the technologies within the smartwatch mean that the Fenix 6X could be the perfect companion for you.
That’s not to say that it doesn’t have modern smartwatch functionality, of course. You still get smart notifications, advanced sleep tracking, menstrual tracking, and you can even use downloadable watch faces, apps, and widgets via the Connect IQ app.
The Garmin Fenix 6X is available in Malaysia for RM4,199 for the Sapphire edition, and up to RM5,699 for the Pro Solar version. To find out more, click here for Garmin Malaysia’s website, or head over to the Aeco Shop for more details.
