Oppo A92 is coming to Malaysia and it’s a little confusing

Oppo Malaysia is launching a new mid-range smartphone and it’s called the Oppo A92. At first glance, you might think that this is the successor to the Oppo A91, but the thing is, the A91 was only launched last month.

According to the teaser, the A92 which is set to arrive in Malaysia in the coming weeks promises to offer quality materials, design and performance for a flawless user experience. That doesn’t explain much and the teaser image shows a very familiar rectangular camera bump that houses 4 cameras.

Is this an Oppo A52 with a different name?

When we search on Oppo China’s website, it appears that the new device could be an A52 with a different name. This isn’t the first time Oppo mixes its product naming for different markets.

The Oppo A52 for the Chinese market features a 6.5″ Full HD+ IPS display that has a punch-hole on the top left corner. It runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

In terms of cameras, it has a 12MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens and two 2MP cameras for depth and macro. The selfie camera is an 8MP shooter. Powering the device is a 5,000mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging via USB-C.

What’s interesting is that the new device comes with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor which doubles as a power button. On top of that, the A52 has stereo speakers with Hi-Res Audio certification, which is pretty rare for a mid-range device.

From the looks of it, the A52 appears to be a refresh of the Oppo A9 2020 that was launched in Malaysia last year for RM1,199. Although it runs on the same processor, RAM and storage configuration, at least the new model is now pushing a higher Full HD+ screen.

According to serial leakster Roland Quandt, the European market will be getting both the A52 and A72. Both are quite identical in specs but the biggest difference appears to be the camera setup. On the A72, the device will get a higher resolution 48MP main camera for the rear, while the selfie camera gets bumped up to 16MP.

We will find out more in the coming weeks as Oppo Malaysia will continue to drop more clues.
