DJI’s Mavic Air 2 could be launching on the 27th of April 2020

Just a few days ago, leaked images of the rumoured upcoming DJI Mavic Air 2 were posted on social media, with the purported DJI Mavic 2 looking pretty different from the original Mavic Air. Now, it looks like we could be seeing the launch of DJI’s latest drone soon.

The company has just posted a teaser video on Twitter that mysteriously tells viewers to “Up Your Game”, along with the date and time of the event: 27 April 2020 at 9:30pm EDT. In Malaysian time, the event will happen at 9:30am on the 28th of April 2020.

If you click on “learn more” (the link in the Tweet), it takes you to a DJI page where you can subscribe for updates—there’s no confirmation of what the event is actually about. However, with alleged Mavic Air 2 leaks appearing over the past few weeks, it seems likely that the the event will see the new drone being launched.

The video appears to feature the top of the drone, where you can see rounded edges, along with four LED lights that are placed in a diamond-shaped pattern. The LEDs are probably battery indicators, although you usually see these in vertical lines.

Compared to certain leaked images in the past, the Mavic Air 2 doesn’t really look that similar. Perhaps this is indicative of a second, more premium model, or maybe the leaks have been wrong from the start. Still, you don’t actually see much of the drone (it’s a drone… right?) in the teaser video, so we’ll reserve more judgement till we hear something official.

Additionally, we could also be seeing a new, larger controller for the Mavic Air 2, if reports are to be believed. This would mean a more conventional form factor for the controller, where you mount a phone onto the controller, as opposed to under the controller with the legs folded out. It’s also been rumoured that we will see a significantly larger 3,500mAh battery in the drone, as compared to the original Mavic Air’s 2,375mAh battery.

In any case, we’ll have to wait for more concrete information on the DJI Mavic Air 2. For now, set your calendars, your reminders, or both. As many countries deal with the COVID-19 pandemic by implementing various lockdown measure, do expect the launch to be held over live stream, probably on DJI’s official YouTube channel.
