The OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro are finally official and both devices are designed to offer the smoothest experience yet on a smartphone. To summarise what’s new, here are the top 10 features that you should know.
After introducing the world’s first 90Hz display on a smartphone with the OnePlus 7 Pro, the latest OnePlus 8 Pro is now pushing an even higher 120Hz refresh rate on a slightly bigger 6.78″ OLED panel. The resolution is slightly higher at 3168×1440 pixels and the screen is also HDR10+ certified, which is quite similar to the Oppo Find X2 Pro.
The screen also claims to offer true to life colour accuracy with a JNCD rating of 0.4. To maximise the high screen refresh rate, the OnePlus 8 Pro has a Motion Estimate Motion Compensate (MEMC) feature that enables you to enjoy 24 fps videos at a smoother 120fps.
However, do note that the standard OnePlus 8 settles for a smaller 6.55″ OLED display with a lower 90Hz refresh rate. Being the more affordable device, the screen pushes a lower Full HD+ resolution of 2400×1080 pixels.
Unlike its predecessor, there’s no more pop-up camera on the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro. Instead, it now features a punch-hole on the top left corner that houses a 16MP selfie camera. This should offer quicker face unlock if you don’t fancy using the in-display fingerprint sensor.
You can expect top-notch performance as both OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro are running on the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor. The Pro model can be configured with either 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and with 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.0 storage.
The standard 8 settles for an LPDDR4 RAM which also comes in either 8GB or 12GB option. Storage remains unchanged with either 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.0 storage.
According to OnePlus, they have made the biggest camera upgrade yet on the OnePlus 8 Pro. It features a 48MP f/1.78 main camera that uses a large 1/1.4″ Sony IMX689 sensor and a 48MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle shooter which utilises a familiar Sony IMX586 sensor.
There’s also an 8MP telephoto camera that offers 3X hybrid zoom while a 5MP camera is used as a colour filter lens. Both main and telephoto cameras are equipped with optical image stabilisation and the 8 Pro can shoot up to a maximum of 4K resolution videos at 60fps.
The standard model settles for a more pedestrian camera setup with a 48MP main camera with a Sony IMX586 sensor and a 16MP ultra-wide-angle lens. The third camera is a macro shooter with a low-resolution 2MP sensor. At least, the main camera is still stabilised with optical image stabilisation.
The 8 Pro comes with IP68 dust and water resistance which is a first for OnePlus. On paper, this means you can submerge your device up to 1.5m deep for not more than 30 minutes.
The OnePlus 8 Pro is fitted with a 4,510mAh battery, which is 10% larger than the 7T Pro. Meanwhile, the smaller OnePlus 8 gets a respectable 4,300mAh battery capacity.
Similar to last year’s models, it still uses the same 30T Warp charge power brick that enables fast charging via USB-C. Not the fastest but still ok.
Another first for OnePlus is 30W fast wireless charging. With the compatible Warp Charge 30 Wireless charging dock, you can get 50% power in just 30 minutes. On top of that, it can also support reverse wireless charging which allows you to charge other accessories wirelessly on the back of the phone. Do note that you don’t get wireless charging support on the non-Pro model.
For a more immersive audio experience, OnePlus has also retained stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos enhancement. This feature is available for both Pro and non-Pro options.
Being a 2020 flagship, the latest series comes with 5G support out of the box. Both models feature Qualcomm’s X55 5G chipset and they also support the latest WiFi 6 standard for faster wireless connectivity.
The latest OnePlus series comes in three colours. Both models are available in Glacial Green and Onyx Black. However, the OnePlus 8 Pro is also offered in Ultramarine Blue while the smaller 8 gets a unique Interstellar Glow which reflects a different colour in various angles. According to OnePlus, the Interstellar Glow option is very challenging to photograph as it looks like a different phone in every shot.
