It’s confirmed: The OnePlus 8 Pro will support 30W wireless charging

The OnePlus 8 Pro is set to launch under a week from now, on the 14th of April. There will be 3 variants rumoured to be arriving, with the OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 8 possibly complemented by a Lite variant (possibly called a OnePlus Z). Among other things, we already know that all variants in the range will have 5G support, and now, OnePlus has confirmed that Warp Charge 30 Wireless is coming with the OnePlus 8 Pro.

This will be the first time that a OnePlus phone supports wireless charging, with a staff member revealing that the OnePlus 8 Pro will be able to be charged to 50% in just 30 minutes. This is achieved by peak charging at 30W, which is an impressive speed compared to many flagships from competitors in the market today.

As with Warp 30T, Warp Charge 30 wireless support will be proprietary to OnePlus phones, which means that you will probably need to purchase a separate charging brick from the company to achieve these peak speeds. However, you’ll still be able to use standard Qi-compatible wireless charging—although this will max out at 10W.

OnePlus says that the company’s new wireless charging standard has a “highly effective” efficiency of 97%—this is made possible by functionalities including an isolated charge pup that will stop charging when currents and voltages outside specification are detected. Additionally, a custom chip will control the voltage and current of the charger to ensure “fast and stable” charging.

While the OnePlus 8 series hasn’t been officially launched yet, we already know some details of the upcoming range based on reliable leaks. Perhaps the most obvious difference could be the inclusion of a hole-punch cutout on the display, doing away with pop-up cameras and notches, and it looks like OnePlus is doing away with the circular camera module on the rear of the standard OnePlus 8.

We’re also going to see a bumped up refresh rate for the OnePlus 8 Pro with a 120Hz display, with the previous 7T and 7T Pro both sporting 90Hz displays. That’s arguably an expected move from the company, with many smartphone-makers already offering 120Hz refresh rates on their top-of-the-line models.

The inclusion of wireless charging—especially at such impressive speeds—could be one of the biggest upgrades for the OnePlus flagship series this year. Besides 5G support (which, as we know, is more about future-proofing at this point), something that has been conspicuous by its absence in OnePlus’ affordable flagship devices.
