Huawei P40 Pro is DxOMark Mobile’s new number 1

The folks at DxOMark have published its camera review for the Huawei P40 Pro. The latest quad-camera flagship was given a new high-score of 128 points, beating the former champions, the Oppo Find X2 Pro and Mi Note 10 Pro by 4 points. It is also 12 points higher than its predecessor, the P30 Pro which scored 116.

To recap, the P40 Pro features a 50MP main camera that has a huge 1/1.28″ quad-bayer sensor. There’s also a 40MP ultra-wide-angle shooter with a large 1/1.54″ sensor size and a 12MP telephoto camera that has a periscope module. Similar to the P30 Pro, it does 5x optical zoom, 10x hybrid zoom and up to 50x digital zoom. The final shooter is a ToF camera for depth sensing.

For the photo category, the P40 Pro recorded 140 points while for video, it did 105 points. According to DxOMark, the P40 Pro achieves an outstanding overall score of 128 because it is the best or one of the best devices they have tested across almost all categories. They found the zoom to be impressive as it produces better detail and lower noise than its competition. They also added that the dual-phase detection on all sub-pixels is the best performing autofocus system they have been with the best texture to noise balance to date.

With the larger sensor and bigger effective pixel size, the P40 Pro is said to be better in very low light compared to any other devices they have tested so far. They also shared that the portrait mode’s bokeh simulation is among the very best they have seen and the image quality from the ultra-wide-angle camera is class-leading. DxOMark also makes a bold claim that the P40 Pro is the best device for recording video at the moment.

In terms of the front camera, the device also achieves the highest score ever on DxOMark Selfie tests. It beats the Nova 6 5G‘s selfie camera by 3 points.

However, it is also worth pointing out that DxOMark had conducted the tests on a European firmware that turns off the camera’s AI feature by default. In addition, they couldn’t perform the same tests as its previous devices due to movement restrictions due to COVID-19 in France. As a result, they have admitted that their thorough outdoor shots were limited.

Another thing worth mentioning is that Huawei has a higher-tier P40 Pro+ which hasn’t been tested yet. On top of that, DxOMark has yet to publish their camera review for the Galaxy S20 Ultra which was launched much earlier.
