If you’re a huge Super Mario fan, here’s an upcoming Lego series that you probably won’t want to miss. Nintendo, the creator of Super Mario, and Lego have announced their partnership to “change the way people interact with Super Mario in the physical world and engage in Lego experiences.” Unlike most movie or game-themed series, the Lego Super Mario offers digital interactivity which includes some elements of the game.
“With this experience, we will help millions of kids with love for Mario to engage and play in a completely new way, where they are in control of creating and playing games with their favourite character. By seamlessly incorporating the latest digital technology, Lego Super Mario is a highly social, interactive and collaborative experience for kids,” said Julia Goldin, Chief Marketing Officer, EVP of the LEGO Group.
Although much has not been revealed about the new Lego series, it is evident from the teaser video that the Mario figurine is interactive, possesses tiny LCD displays and it’s Bluetooth-connected. The figure is able to emote and also make sounds as he goes along collecting coins. Individuals can choose to freely build Mario’s world or opt to play with Mario in the world that they have created. The Super Mario-themed set will launch at some point this year but the exact date and price have not been revealed yet.
In an interview by the Brothers Brick, the Digital Design Lead for Lego Super Mario, Jonathan Bennick, has shared that the project with Nintendo has been four years in the making. He also added that Mario uses an optical sensor at the bottom, between his feet which can detect the colour of the Lego palette. Some of the tiles will come with pre-applied stickers which are scanned by Mario for a unique reaction.
