Is that the OnePlus 8 Pro I see in Robert Downey Jr.’s hand?

Rumours say that the OnePlus 8 Pro is set to launch in the middle of April 2020, and it looks like OnePlus has already given out units to its global brand ambassadors. Robert Downey Jr. was recently photographed using a new-looking OnePlus—and for all intents and purposes, it looks very much like this is the company’s upcoming flagship device.

The image was reportedly taken during a OnePlus commercial, posted on a photographer’s Instagram account, before it was taken down. But of course, this is the internet. And when you combine that with the fact that this is Robert Downey Jr. and a new OnePlus phone in the same photo—everyone’s watching. The image was reshared over social media, it appears to be very alike to renders leaked last year by @OnLeaks.

Based on the images, we can expect a new, punch-hole cut out on the front of the OnePlus 8 Pro, which is certainly the trend now. The OnePlus 7T Pro, on the other hand, featured a pop-up selfie camera—and so did the OnePlus 7 Pro. To be honest, I’m caught in two minds over this. On the one hand, I understand that the pop-up camera thing was always going to be eventually replaced by the next “notch”. And the punch-hole cutout is probably a more sensible choice.

On the other, one of OnePlus’ strengths (in recent years, at least) is the displays on their smartphones. The OnePlus 7T Pro’s display—totally unencumbered—was a joy to look at.

There’s also a colour version of the image, and it also looks like we could be seeing a new OnePlus colour that looks like it sits midway between copper and orange. And it’s a little hard to tell, but that could be frosted glass on the back of the phone in Downey Jr.’s hand.

Not too many concrete details have been revealed yet, but I think that a 120Hz display is a distinct possibility for the next OnePlus smartphone, while there have been rumours that we will be seeing a first 5G phone from the company. The images also show that OnePlus will be including a ToF sensor onto the new quad-camera setup on the 8Pro, and it’s also likely to be powered by the Snapdragon 865 chipset—Qualcomm’s latest and greatest.

We don’t have much longer to wait for the OnePlus 8 Pro, with the release expected during the middle of April. I’m certainly looking forward to see the final product.
