Sony’s new 20mm F1.8 lens is now available in Malaysia

Sony Malaysia has launched its brand new G Lens, the FE 20mm F1.8 G (SEL20F18G) locally. It was announced in San Diego, California on 25th February 2020 and it is the widest full-frame prime lens in Sony’s E-mount line up. Sony claims that this lens will enable users to explore their artistic imagination and capture stunning images of landscapes as well as record incredible videos.

The FE 20mm F1.8 weighs 373g and this enables it to be mobile when it is used with the E-mount bodies. The lens features two AA (advanced aspherical) elements and three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and these are designed to conceal chromatic aberration and to deliver high-quality corner to corner sharpness even at the highest aperture setting of F1.8 with minimal distortion.

Chromatic aberration is when the lens of a camera is unable to bring all wavelengths of colour to the same focal plane or when the wavelengths of colours are focused at different positions on the focal plane. This essentially causes the image to be blurry and have noticeable colour fringing on the edges.

Below are sample images taken using the FE 20mm F1.8 G.

The lens is built with two XD linear motors and this allows fast and swift autofocusing for both still photography and video shooting. It is also designed to be dust and moisture resistant, and comes with a fluorine front element coating. It is compatible with 67mm filters and comes with a focus hold button as well as an aperture ring with a click off/on switch. Sony’s FE 20mm F1.8 G claims to offer an exceptional bokeh with its close up performance with a minimum focus distance of 7.5 inches (max. magnification: 0.2 times).

Sony Malaysia is offering an early bird discount where the lens is available for RM4,199, at all authorised Sony retailers as well as the Sony online store. The promotion ends nationwide on 15th March 2020. There is also a purchase with purchase promotion that offers the GP-VPT1, remote control tripod for RM199, GP-VPT2BT, Bluetooth grip for RM399 and the ECM-B1M, shotgun microphone for RM999.
