Sony Xperia 1 successor has a headphone jack and a ridiculous name

Sony is expected to reveal its first 5G flagship smartphone today. Ahead of the virtual launch, Max Weinbach of XDA Developers has shared what appears to be the official image and spec-sheet for the upcoming flagship that’s going to be called the Sony Xperia 1 II.

In terms of design, the Xperia 1 II looks like the speculated “Xperia 5 Plus” that was rumoured previously. It retains the same boxy rectangular exterior with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and a dedicated camera shutter button. On the rear, it gets a quad-camera setup that’s positioned on the top left corner.

If you look closely, there’s a small ZEISS T* label between the lenses. This indicates an anti-reflecting coating on the lens that can help eliminate ghosting and flares from your images.

In terms of specs, the Sony Xperia 1 II features a familiar 6.5″ 21:9 4K HDR OLED display and it runs on a Snapdragon 865 processor with 5G (sub-6) connectivity. The device comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage. There’s a mention of Motion Blur Reduction that promises to offer 90Hz equivalent benefit, but this doesn’t necessarily mean it has a higher refresh rate.

In terms of camera, it has a 12MP main shooter (24mm) with a large 1/1.7″ sensor, a 12MP telephoto camera (70mm) and a 12MP (16mm) ultra-wide-angle lens. In addition, there’s also a 3D ToF camera for depth sensing. There’s no mention of 8K video recording and it is expected since all three cameras are using 12MP sensors.

Improving over the current Xperia 1 is a larger 4,000mAh battery and it even supports wireless charging. Audio enthusiasts will be happy that the 3.5mm headphone jack is back and it also retains stereo front speakers. In terms of colours, there are only two options, Black and Purple.

The Sony Xperia 1 II naming sounds silly when you try to pronounce it. Somehow Sony is using the same marketing approach as its camera division where it releases a new model with a higher “Mark” number. So what’s next? Sony Xperia 1 III, Xperia 1 IV? Personally, I think it would be better if they went with Xperia 1.1 or 1.2, like HMD Global’s approach for Nokia devices.

Since Sony Malaysia has continued to offer smartphones in Malaysia, we probably can expect the new Xperia 1 II to come to our shores sometime this year. Who knows, they probably would bundle the upcoming Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones for free.
