Samsung ad reveals a “problem” with the Galaxy Z Flip

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is the next foldable device that comes in a clam-shell form factor. Ahead of its official announcement, Samsung has released a teaser ad for its new flip-phone during the Oscars broadcast. It confirms what we know so far but there’s a tiny disclaimer that reveals that an issue with the display.

The almost 30-second ad was recorded by The Verge’s Nilay Patel which reveals the Galaxy Z Flip in its full glory. It has a flexible display on the inside while the outer cover gets a tiny screen which displays the time and it also allows you to answer or reject calls. The overall exterior including the hinge looks similar to the Galaxy Fold.

In the first few seconds of the video, there’s a fine print on the bottom right that says “You may notice a crease at the centre of the main screen, which is a natural characteristic of the screen”. Despite having a new Ultra-Thin Glass as a protective layer, the new foldable still couldn’t fully address the creasing issue.

To be fair, all foldable smartphones exhibit some form of creasing on the display. Even Motorola has openly mentioned that “bumps and lumps” on the new Razr is normal. Perhaps the new material will offer better durability especially when it comes to contact with sharp objects or fingernails.

As revealed by serial leakster Roland Quandt, the Galaxy Z Flip will feature a flexible 6.7″ Dynamic AMOLED display that pushes a Full HD+ resolution. It will run on a Snapdragon 855+ processor with 8GB RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.0 storage. Powering the device is a 3,300mAh battery that supports 15W fast charging via USB-C.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is expected to be revealed alongside the Galaxy S20 series in San Francisco. The Samsung Unpacked event is happening at 11am on 11th February, which is at 3.00am on 12th February in Malaysia. You can catch it live on Samsung Malaysia’s website.
