TNG RFID to be expanded for petrol, parking and retail purchases

At today’s Touch ‘n Go event, the company has revealed plans to expand the usage for its TNG RFID tag. Users with the RFID tag installed on their cars can soon use it to pay more than just highway tolls.

At the moment, Touch ‘n Go RFID is supported at most major highway toll plazas which are based on an open-system. This includes 10 toll-plazas on PLUS and all remaining closed-system toll plazas on the North-South Expressway will be supported on 1st April 2020.

The benefit of RFID is that it doesn’t require batteries and you can top up easily on your smartphone with no extra surcharge. For greater convenience, you can also enable auto-reload with your credit or debit card.

In Q3 2020, Touch ‘n Go RFID will be introduced for car parks and RFID support for petrol stations is expected to be introduced by Q4 2020. What’s even interesting is that Touch ‘n Go also has plans to roll out RFID payment for drive-thrus in early 2021. Imagine paying for your fast food or coffee without taking out your smartphone or wallet.

At the moment, the RFID tag is linked to the TNG eWallet but there are also plans for an open payment system which was announced by their parent company, CIMB Group. With an Open Payment, users will be able to link their RFID tags to bank accounts, credit cards and debit cards.

In case you missed it, Touch ‘n Go will start charging RM35 for RFID tags beginning 15th February 2020. During the event, they have also compared the cost of RFID in other countries and the RM35 price tag is still cheaper than Singapore, Taiwan and Australia. If you haven’t installed it yet, you can still enjoy free installation until the deadline.
