Samsung’s next Galaxy smartwatch could have a huge upgrade

The Galaxy Watch Active series is viewed by many as the successor to the Galaxy Watch—however, I’d argue that it’s not really a natural successor. That’s mainly down to the virtual bezel that the Active 2 uses, which does a decent enough job of simulating the popular rotating bezel from the Galaxy Watch, without truly replacing it. Now, we might just see the Galaxy Watch 2 arrive soon, along with 8GB of onboard storage, if reports are to be believed.

According to Sammobile, the new smartwatch has the model numbers SM-R840/845 and SM-R850/855, with two sizes available. Sources also reveal that we’re going to see the onboard storage doubled from Samsung’s last Galaxy smartwatch, although we aren’t sure on the exact sizes that will be available—42mm and 46mm is likely if it’s a new Galaxy Watch, or 40mm and 44mm for the Galaxy Watch Active.

While we expect the new smartwatch from Samsung to have a cellular variant for each model, perhaps it’s also worth noting that Samsung is focusing on 5G smartphones this year. Could it be possible that a new Samsung smartwatch could feature 5G support?

In any case, more onboard storage is always a good thing. In addition to more space for standalone apps, users also have the option to download playlists from Spotify and whatnot, so double the 4GB storage would certainly come in handy.

Meanwhile, another upgrade could be the battery, with a 330mAh battery expected on the SM-R840—for comparison, the smaller 40mm Galaxy Watch Active 2 has a 247mAh sized battery.

If you’re excited for the new smartwatch, the report states that we’ll have to be patient. This means that we probably won’t see it launched at the Galaxy Unpacked event in February, with the next wearable expected towards the second half of 2020.

The big question, for me, is whether the next wearable will have a rotating bezel, or not. The Galaxy Watch Active 2 was only released in September 2019, so perhaps the Galaxy Watch is due for an update. And a physical bezel just has a way more satisfying feel to it.
