Current Axiata Group CEO, Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim will retire at the end of this year. His current contract was supposed to end on 2nd March 2020 and it was extended for another 10 months.
Jamaludin has served as Axiata CEO for 12 years since the company was demerged (formerly known as TM International Berhad) from Telekom Malaysia. He has 39 years of experience in the ICT industry and he was also the former CEO at Maxis between 1997 to 2007.
According to TheEdgeMarkets, the board has requested Jamaludin to extend his contract and to continue until the end of 2020 to ensure a smooth and successful leadership.
Former UEM Group Managing director and current Axiata non-executive director, Dato’ Mohd Izzaddin Idris, has been appointed as the Deputy Group CEO and he will take over the CEO role after Jamaludin retires. He has over 20 years of experience in investment banking, financial and general management. Before joining Axiata, he was also the Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President (Group Finance) of Tenaga National Berhad.
Last year, Axiata and Telenor had announced a potential merger which will form a new global champion that has a massive foothold in Asia. Unfortunately, the proposed merger didn’t go through due to some complexities. It was recently reported that a merger could be happening again and a potential deal is currently being negotiated between Khazanah and Telenor.
Axiata currently manages multiple telcos across Asia which include Celcom, XL Axiata, Dialog, Robi, Smart and NCell. The company also owns Boost eWallet under its Digital Business.
