Samsung Galaxy S20 series features 100X zoom, 8K video & 40MP selfie

In the next month or two, Huawei and Samsung will be releasing their latest flagship smartphones that are going big on photography. The Samsung Galaxy S20 series is scheduled to launch on 11 February and now a purported spec-sheet has surfaced online thanks to serial leakster Ishan Agarwal via MySmartPrice.

As rumoured before, all three models – the Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 “Ultra”, will feature a fluid 120Hz refresh rate on a Dynamic AMOLED. Unlike the current Galaxy Note 10 series, all models under the S20 will be pushing Quad HD+ resolution (3200×1440 pixels) in a rather tall 20:9 aspect ratio. As a comparison, the 6.8″ display on the Galaxy Note 10+ is doing 3040×1440 pixels in a 19:9 aspect ratio.

This year it seems that Samsung is dropping the entry-level “e” model and the new S20 will be the smallest of the series with a 6.2″ display. The S20+ will get a 6.7″ panel which the Ultra boasts a huge 6.9″ display.

In typical Samsung tradition, the Galaxy S20 for the European and Asian market will be running on a 7nm Exynos 990 processor instead of a Qualcomm unit. The new Snapdragon 865 is expected to be available for the US variants.

The Galaxy S20 series will be offered with a minimum of 128GB of internal storage and the top of the line S20 “Ultra” model will be offered with a bigger 512GB storage option. Power users will be pleased to know that Samsung appears to be making the microSD card expansion slot a standard feature across the range. This makes sense especially if Samsung wants to make its devices a mobile videography tool.

Although the RAM configuration isn’t listed here, the devices are expected to come with 12GB of RAM as standard, while the Galaxy S20 Ultra could come with 16GB of RAM for the highest 512GB model.

In the imaging department, the S20 Ultra will be a camera beast boasting a high-resolution 108MP main camera and a 48MP telephoto sensor that can offer up to 100X zoom. According to multiple sources, the optical lens can do 10X optical zoom and it offers up to 100X zoom in digital. There’s also a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a ToF 3D sensor for depth effects.

For the other two S20 models, it will settle for a 12MP main camera which is said to offer a larger 1.8-micron pixel size for better low-light capabilities. On the other hand, the telephoto camera is said to offer 3X optical zoom and it uses a higher 64MP sensor, which is already a huge upgrade compared to its predecessors. The third shooter will also be a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera, but the S20+ will get an additional fourth camera for ToF.

One of the biggest upgrades is 8K video recording across the range. When it comes to selfies, the S20 Ultra is listed with a higher resolution 40MP wide front camera, while the other two settles for a familiar 10MP selfie camera. The selfie cameras across the range can shoot videos up to 4K in 60fps.

In terms of battery, the S20 will get 4,000mAh capacity while the top of the line Ultra gets a huge 5,000mAh unit. Also included as standard are IP68 water-resistance and stereo speakers tuned by AKG.

Although the launch is taking place next month, it appears that Samsung will begin its sales a month after the Galaxy Unpacked event. According to Ishan, delivery and sales will probably start around 13th March 2020, however, we do believe that Samsung will probably start preorders shortly after the Unpacked event.

Since Malaysia is a key market for Samsung, you can expect Malaysia to be among the first wave countries to get it. As usual, our local pricing is often one of the most affordable in the world and Samsung Malaysia usually is pretty generous when it comes to pre-order freebies and promotion.

What do you think of the purported hardware specs? For those who want to nit-pick, the only thing that’s missing is a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is extremely rare in flagship smartphones these days.
