Honor V30 Pro cameras outperform the Huawei Mate 30 Pro according to DxOMark

Photography benchmarking site, DxOMark has just completed its evaluation of the Honor V30 Pro (aka Honor View 30 Pro for global market) and they have given it the second-highest score on their smartphone list. What’s surprising is that the triple-camera Honor flagship is ranked higher than the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, which comes with a quad-camera setup.

The Honor V30 Pro gets an overall score of 122, with 133 points for photography category and 100 points for video. The Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G is still ranked #1 with a score of 123, while the Mate 30 Pro (4G variant) and Xiaomi CC9 Pro are currently sharing the third spot with a score of 121.

It is worth mentioning that the Honor V30 Pro is running on a Kirin 990 5G SoC which is similar to the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G. Compared to the standard Kirin 990 SoC on the Mate 30 Pro (4G version), the Kirin 990 5G has a higher-clocked middle-core CPU and a more powerful dual-core NPU. A better processor could offer better imaging advantage especially when it comes to AI-assisted processing.

To recap, the Honor V30 Pro features a 40MP f/1.6 main camera with a large 1/1.7″ sensor, which is similar to the Mate 30 Pro series. For added versatility, it also gets a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera and an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. Both the main and telephoto camera are equipped with optical image stabilisation.

According to DxOMark, the Honor V30 Pro offers better if not comparable image quality than more expensive flagship smartphones. They added that the camera excels in night photography as it can capture good levels of detail while keeping noise levels under control. DxOMark has also noted some minor autofocus instabilities with the device which prevented it from securing the top spot.

For video, they remarked that the device’s video quality is very comparable to the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G with the exception of autofocus. It offers accurate exposure in various lighting conditions while producing a good colour rendering for both indoor and outdoor shots. On the downside, they noticed strong denoising artifacts in low light videos and unnecessary refocusing errors in most conditions.
