Realme X50 5G: Is this a serious Redmi K30 5G challenger?

Realme has officially jumped on the 5G bandwagon with the release of its Realme X50. This is a dual-band 5G smartphone that runs on a Snapdragon 765G processor and it also gets a 120Hz display. Looking at the spec-sheet, the X50 goes head to head with Xiaomi’s Redmi K30 5G, but is it better?

One of the biggest surprises is the display. The Realme X50 features a 6.57″ 120Hz display that pushes a Full HD+ resolution in a 20:9 aspect ratio. Similar to the Redmi K30 series, it also gets a wide notch with two selfie cameras but they are placed on the top left corner. However, the K30 5G is a slightly bigger device with a display that spans at 6.67″.

It is also an IPS LCD panel and it comes with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor which doubles as a power button. Under the hood, the X50 also runs on the same Snapdragon 765G processor which has an integrated 5G modem supporting both NSA and SA networks. The Realme device can be configured with up to 12GB of RAM and with up to 256GB of storage but you can’t expand the storage further via a microSD card.

In the camera department, the Realme X50 gets a quad-camera setup but it offers greater versatility than the Redmi K30. The main camera is also a 64MP shooter but it gets a wider f/1.8 aperture. There’s also an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 12MP telephoto camera that offers 2X optical zoom. The 4th camera is a 2MP shooter that’s dedicated for macro mode.

For selfies, the X50 gets a 16MP f/2.0 main camera and an 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera. This offers an advantage for group selfies as the Redmi K30 5G gets a 20MP primary selfie camera plus a secondary 2MP camera for depth effects.

Powering the Realme X50 is a 4,200mAh battery which supports 30W VOOC Flash Charge 4.0 via USB-C. According to Realme, you can get up to 70% charge in just 30 minutes. As a comparison, the Redmi K30 5G gets a larger 4,500mAh battery and a 30W fast charger which is rated to do pump a full charge in just 57 minutes.

The Realme X50 is officially priced at CNY 2,499 (about RM1,476) for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage version and CNY 2,999 (about RM1,771) for the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage option. Overall, it is slightly more affordable the Xiaomi’s offering.

To recap, the Redmi K30 5G is priced at CNY 2,599 (about RM1,535) for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage version and CNY 2,899 (about RM1,712) for the 8GB RAM + 256GB storage model.

For those that want a larger battery, a bigger screen and a 3.5mm headphone jack, the Redmi K30 5G might be a more appealing option. However, the Realme X50 offers better camera configuration such as an ultra-wide-angle selfie camera and a telephoto lens for the rear. Whichever option you pick, both options are probably the most affordable dual-mode 5G smartphones at the moment.
