Samsung commands 53.9% of 5G smartphone market, first 5G tablet coming soon

Samsung has sold over 6.7 million Galaxy 5G smartphones worldwide in 2019 and this is an indication that consumers are eager to experience high-speed internet connectivity. Based on Counterpoint Research findings, the Korean smartphone maker commands a significant 53.9% market share for 5G smartphones as of November 2019.

For the past year, Samsung has launched a total of five 5G models which include the Galaxy S10 5G, Galaxy Note 10 5G, Galaxy Note 10+ 5G, Galaxy A90 5G and the Galaxy Fold 5G. According to TM Roh, Samsung Electronic’s Head of Research and Development at the IT & Mobile Communications Division, 2020 will be the year of Galaxy 5G and they will bring 5G to more device categories.

Apart from smartphones, Samsung is bringing 5G to tablets for the very first time with the introduction of the Galaxy Tab S6 5G. The 5G connected flagship tablet will be released in South Korea in the first quarter of 2020.

With 5G going live in selected markets last year, 5G smartphones have contributed to just 1% of total global sales in 2019 according to data from Counterpoint Research. 2020 is said to be a breakout year and 5G smartphones are expected to grow by 1,687% to 18% of the total sales volume worldwide. Neil Shah, the VP of Research at Counterpoint Research has attributed Samsung as the leading player that catalyse 5G market development with end-to-end 5G offerings from 3GPP standards contributions, semiconductors, mobile devices to network equipment.

According to Samsung, they are committed to an open, collaborative approach to networking and this has helped accelerate delivery of 5G to consumers and businesses. Apart from delivering 5G devices, they have also provided network equipment for the world’s first 5G commercial service in Korea as well as other global telcos to expand 5G networks while introducing 5G experiences and use cases.
