Yes, it’s 2020 and there are no flying cars—this Malaysian is doing something about it

The internet is awash with memes that poke a little fun at the fact that it’s 2020, and we still don’t have flying cars. In the early 90s, the PM at the time (and the present), Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad unveiled the Wawasan 2020 plan—and along with it, came several artists’ conceptualisations of what 2020 would look like in Malaysia.

Part of many visuals, of course, were flying cars. With all four wheels of cars in the country still firmly planted on the questionable roads in Malaysia, some of the memes have brought some genuinely laugh-out-loud moments (like the one below).

So yes, we haven’t seen flying cars in Malaysia just yet. But while most of us have simply sat back and enjoyed the memes, others have put a little more effort towards creating these memes in their humorous generosity. But one Malaysian has taken things to yet another level with a certain video—the kind of video that you’d never realise you needed, until you’ve see it.

Have a look:

Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) graduate, Riyadh Syabil uploaded a video of a flying Perodua Myvi, with computer-generated imagery (CGI) effects used to show a white Myvi slowing to a halt in an empty parking lot, before taking off. The entire process took all of 3 days, while Riyadh used 3ds Max & Adobe After Effects—and an Asus Zenphone Max Pro M1—to create the video.

There might also be a sequel coming soon. What that would be, I have no idea. But in the meantime, perhaps this is evidence that while Wawasan 2020 didn’t exactly come to fruition in ways that many of us imagined, it’s pretty impressive that someone had the creativity and skills to put something like this together—and with perfect timing, too.

Malaysia boleh.
