The Motorola Razr becomes the latest foldable phone to be delayed

The Motorola Razr is, understandably, a smartphone that most of us have been eagerly awaiting. After the Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X, it’s a foldable smartphone that offers a throwback to the iconic flip-phones of the past—notably the original Moto Razr.

Originally slated to be available in stores on the 9th of January 2020, with pre-orders to begin on the 26th of December, Motorola has now delayed the launch of the foldable phone due to difficulties with meeting the “high” demand.

According to Droid-life, the company has readjusted the Razr’s pre-sale and launch dates, although it shouldn’t be too big of a delay. Here’s the full statement:

Since its announcement in November, the new motorola razr has received unparalleled excitement and interest from consumers. Demand has been high, and as a result, has quickly outgrown supply predictions.

Motorola has decided to adjust razr’s presale and launch timing to better meet consumer demand. We are working to determine the appropriate quantity and schedule to ensure that more consumers have access to razr at launch.

We do not anticipate a significant shift from our original availability timeline.

It’s worth nothing that other major foldable smartphones—notably the Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X—also encountered difficulties in meeting original launch dates. The Huawei Mate X is still only available in China, and Samsung had to recall review units of the Galaxy Fold from reviewers and delay the launch of the device due to the now infamous durability issues with the smartphone.

And now that there are issues with Huawei and its smartphones with GMS, we’re not sure if we’re going to see Huawei’s foldable smartphone actually come to the global market outside China.

But the delay with the Motorola Razr doesn’t appear to be caused by any design flaws or anything as serious as what Huawei are currently facing. Based on their statement, it appears that the huge demand for the Razr is the cause here—although it’s a tad surprising that Motorola didn’t anticipate such demand for only the third foldable smartphone to hit the market.

To recap on its specs, the Motorola Razr will come with a 2.7″ gOLED panel that pushes an 800 x 600 resolution, while the main display on the inside is a 6.2″Flex View pOLED display with a 2142 x 867 resolution. It will also be powered by the Snapdragon 710 processor mated to 6GB of RAM, and will have 128GB of storage. Sustaining the device is a 2,510mAh battery, which can be charged via USB-C at 15W.

It won’t be cheap, with a price of US$1,499 (about RM6,232), and will be exclusive to Verizon in the United States. Originally set to be available in stores (in the U.S.) on the 9th of January 2020, it should still be launched within Q1 2020, based on Motorola’s official statement.
