The next Samsung Galaxy Fold doesn’t look good

Samsung will be introducing more foldable smartphones in 2020 and their next device will feature a clamshell form factor. Now we get a clear look at the purported Samsung flip-phone thanks to leaked images shared on Weibo.

We still don’t know what it’s going to be called but this is completely different from the current Samsung Galaxy Fold. When unfolded, it looks like a tall candy-bar smartphone that has a punch-hole selfie camera at the top. However, unlike the Galaxy Note 10, it has very thick bezels and it looks very clunky compared to the sleek Motorola Razr.

The device folds right in the middle and it appears to be using the same hinge mechanism as the Galaxy Fold. Unfortunately, there are no photos of the sides when it is closed so we can’t tell if it will leave a noticeable “thigh-gap”. The recent foldable video by Samsung had shown a clam-shell device that can be folded completely flat.

Like the Razr, there’s also a secondary screen on the cover. As shown above, the cover display looks tiny with just enough room to display the date and time and possibly notification icons. But there’s a huge space on the cover and we think that Samsung may fit a bigger screen which can be utilised to take instant selfies without unfolding the phone. There’s also a dual-camera bump which is likely to be utilised as the main camera.

So far there are no details of its hardware specs but Sammobile speculates that it will come with two separate battery cells like the current Galaxy Fold and one of it is purported to have a 900mAh capacity. Due to its compact dimensions, the upcoming device might be running on a less powerful but frugal processor and a smaller battery.

Motorola Razr

Overall in terms of design, I still think the Razr looks so much better and it retains the same iconic design elements as the original icon. Maybe this particular Samsung device is just a prototype and the final product is different. It is also worth mentioning that Samsung still makes flip-phones for selected markets like China so there’s also a possibility that it won’t be released globally.

The current Samsung Galaxy Fold was announced alongside the Galaxy S10 series and we are guessing that the sequel could be revealed during the Galaxy S11 launch that’s expected to take place in February 2020.
