A few weeks ago, it was discovered that the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor on the Samsung Galaxy S10 can be unlocked by anyone if a certain 3rd party screen protector is applied. Maybank, which support fingerprint authentication on its mobile app, has just issued an announcement for its customers using the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 series.
If you’re currently on the Galaxy S10, S10+, Note 10 and Note 10+, they are requesting users to update their devices to the latest software version especially if you use their Quick Touch biometric feature.
They would also like to remind customers that they can also disable the Quick Touch feature on the Maybank app by tapping on the “drawer” on the top left corner > Me > Login Details > Biometric Login.
Before the solution was ready, several banks in the UK have temporarily suspended their app earlier this week for affected Galaxy devices. Fortunately, Samsung has already started pushing a fix for the fingerprint sensor issue for all users worldwide. According to Samsung, some silicon covers with the textured surface may be recognised as a fingerprint during registration and unlocking. They recommend registering a new fingerprint with no screen cover attached.
At the time of posting, we’ve already received the update on our Galaxy S10+ unit from Europe. The update should be rolled out to Malaysian Galaxy S10 and Note 10 series units very soon.
[ UPDATE 27/10/2019 09:00 ] The fingerprint security fix is now available in Malaysia.
